The role of the Southern Flinders Ranges Development Board is to encourage economic development within the region. Primary outcomes sought from Board activities are new business investment and new employment.

The Development Board commenced as a regional body in 1993 after starting as a city based organisation in 1988, and was originally named 'The Port Pirie Regional Development Board'.

The Southern Flinders Ranges Development Board exists as an independent incorporated organisation operating under a joint Resource Agreement between the South Australian Government and the Port Pirie Regional Council, Northern Areas Council and Mount Remarkable District Council.

The Department of Trade and Economic Development contributes funding each year to the Board which is matched by a combined Local Government contribution. The current Resource Agreement commits the parties to a 5 year funding agreement. State Government provides additional funding to help maintain a small business advisory service. The Board has separately agreed to deliver the Regions at Work program under the Dept. of Further Education, Employment, Science and Technology.

Board membership comprises four persons nominated by local government and four appointed industry representatives. A Chairman is separately appointed by the Board. An officer of the Department of Trade and Economic Development attends Board meetings as a non voting representative of the Minister for Regional Development.

Board employees perform the task of implementing the Board's strategic direction and are actively involved in pursuing initiatives and proposals which deliver on core outcome targets. The Board currently employs officers under the following titles:

  • Executive Manager
  • Economic Development Officer
  • Business Development Officer
  • Workforce Development Officer
  • Tourism Development Officer
  • Administration Finance Officer
  • Administrative Officer
